A thriller that sounds more like a comedy? I just don’t know about this one. Buried director Rodrigo Cortés has come up with his next project, a psychological thriller he wrote himself. Red Lights will star Sigourney Weaver as a psychologist studying paranormal activity. Sounds fine so far but here comes the funny part: somewhere along the way, she and her assistant are led to investigate renowned psychic, Robert De Niro. So now, give yourself a moment and just try to imagine taking De Niro seriously as a psychic. Can’t do it, right? I know I can’t. My head keeps putting him in a ridiculous outfit, bandanna wrapped around his head, sitting in front of a crystal ball and speaking in his usual New Yawk accent. “Lemme tell you whadIsee. I see you geddin’ ya head bashed in and stuffed into a trunk. I see fishes. Swimmin’.” I picture him trying to be serious, but me laughing inappropriately. I see him trying to get Sigourney in bed. I see Sigourney laughing inappropriately too.
Then again, Cortés seems to have made a compelling 100 minute film around the impossible situation of a dude stuck in a coffin. So what do I know?
I’m envisioning Ricky Gervais as the assistant and Lily Tomlin as a whacky secretary…
