I Have Never Wanted to See a Movie Less Than This James Franco/Russell Crowe Mess

Let’s go over a list of things that will make me never want to see a movie:

1) First and foremost, the phrase “Directed by James Franco.

Hard pass.

2) “Starring Russell Crowe.” Is it 2003? No? Then I don’t want to see Russell Crowe’s DRAMA face.

(I will make an exception for the rare Russell Crowe comedy, so long as it’s co-starring a Gosling.)

3. A blatant disregard for quality source material.

This project that Franco is directing is an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian. Having read The Road and, like, a couple of pages of All the Pretty Horses and maybe a third of No Country For Old Men, I consider myself an almost-fan of McCarthy. Still, I know he deserves more than a fucking Franco adaptation. All of his works are various levels of unfilmable, since his words are the most beautiful of all the rambly layered poetry, and it would take a hell of a lot more talent than Franco possesses to due them justice.

Oh, and then WHILE I WAS WRITING THIS, an update came in that Franco’s lack of attention to or care for his source material goes deeper than we could have guessed. From The Hollywood Reporter, “The project is now being shelved because the filmmakers didn’t have the rights to the novel.” THEY DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER TO GET THE RIGHTS TO THE BOOK THEY’RE ADAPTING.

I can’t believe I was expecting anything more.
