James Spader has been cast in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron. He will play Ultron, a mad artificial intelligence housed in an adamantium robotic body.
That’s a crazy casting choice, and almost as surprising as Ben Affleck being cast as Batman. But on the other hand, James Spader is a hell of an actor, can play creepy just about better than anyone, and while I doubt the role would call for it, dude can do leering sexual deviant like a BOSS.
I wouldn’t have been that surprised maybe ten years ago, but Spader’s career has turned mostly toward television of late, with Boston Legal, a turn on “The Office,” and his new drama, “The Blacklist.” He’s not exactly A-list, but Marvel (and Whedon) are pretty great at focusing on talent, rather than the name, and Spader is an immense, though lately underappreciated, talent.
