How Will 'The Mindy Project' Have Time For Its Regular Characters With All the Guest Stars They Have Lined Up?

We’re only about three weeks out from the return of The Mindy Project, and the guest star announcements have been rolling out like crazy. As Emily pointed out with her New Girl analysis, guest stars can be hit or miss. It can easily go the way of meaningless, distracting stunt casting. But The Mindy Project’s cameos and guest arcs have generally been solid. Don’t even get me started on Seth Rogen’s episode. Or Ed Helms. If these new characters can be as charming and fully developed as those two, this will be a hell of a season.

Rob Mcelhenney will be in the season premiere, playing Morgan’s cousin, a “hot but sleazy” IT guy in the office.

Rhea Perlman will play Danny’s mother as a recurring role, taking on the disapproving mother-in-law trope.

Niecy Nash will be playing Mindy’s “work nemesis.”

Shonda Rhimes will be playing herself.

Allison Tolman is the latest addition. It was announced today that she’ll play a romance novelist who’s set up on a horrible blind date with Peter, who needs to make amends. I’m going to trust that that entire B plot isn’t going to revolve around chronically shallow Peter making fat jokes.

And while this one is totally unconfirmed, it was publicly hinted at. Mindy Kaling posted this picture to her Instagram account this week with the caption “At work today. Gross.”

If Sam Rockwell is on the show and there’s NOT a dance-off, I move for an immediate cancellation.
