Mariah Carey’s newest album Caution doesn’t come out until tomorrow, yet she just opened up a can of weaponized glitter and knocked Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack down a few pegs to nab iTunes’ #1 album spot. By what sorcery, you ask? Magical Mariah diva dust, that’s how! It was the soundtrack to the movie Glitter that shot up the charts, propelled by Mariah’s global fanbase (her lambily) and the power of of Twitter.

Glitter is right up there with Gili, Ishtar, and From Justin To Kelly on the list of movies that can double as an easy punchline, or a gag gift for your holiday White Elephant exchange. The loosely autobiographical 2001 flop, starring Mariah, has a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was pretty much universally mocked as a silly vanity project for a troubled diva. Add in the fact that the release of the film’s soundtrack was delayed because Mariah was hospitalized for what she now attributes to a then un-diagnosed bipolar II disorder, you’ve got a recipe for a glitter bomb the likes of which the world has never seen. The date of the eventual release: September 11, 2001. The timing could not have been worse. Neither could the movie.

But the album is not the film and while Mariah’s never shown much aptitude for acting, her musical prowess cannot be denied. And many a die hard Mariah fan will tell you that Glitter is an underrated gem in Mariah’s certified platinum tiara. There’s even a hashtag on Twitter called #JusticeforGlitter that’s been floating around for a while. People knew the album’s flop had nothing to do with its quality. That hashtag will come back in this story like Chekhov’s 6” stiletto (though Mariah prefers a kitten heel slipper these days).

The lambily does not fuck around. They are dedicated and well versed in the Mariah catalog of bangers, bops, and jams. One French member of the lambily was eagerly counting down the days until Caution was released, and created a little calendar and listening schedule. He encouraged others to join in.

This was peeped by a fan account who nabbed the countdown idea and on the Glitter day, added in the unifying #JusticeForGlitter. And just like that, Lady Gaga started hearing Mariah’s little shoes clip-clopping up behind her.

Despite the fact that people had to actually purchase the album since it wasn’t available streaming, it started climbing the charts with a quickness. First, it came for the soundtracks charts.

Then it freed itself from the shackles of genre and began its dizzying ascent to the top.

Mariah herself was amazed.

And just like that, the shimmering, shining comet that is the soundtrack to Glitter, crossed the sky and showered an undeserving world with lens flares and light!
