Women of Hollywood Are Decreeing Time's Up for Sexual Predators Everywhere
Three hundred powerful Hollywood women have joined together to create the Time’s Up initiative. This initiative seeks to empower and assist women from every walk of life who experience sexual harassment, sexual assault, and inequality in their workplace. Backed by a $13 million defense fund, and some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, Time’s Up wants to close the gaps that allow widespread harassment to thrive while our harassers rise to the top of their profession by counting on our silence and suffering.
The Time’s Up initiative allows women in positions of great visibility to give their voices to women who otherwise would not have one. It calls for changes in legislation as a way to close the openings that allow men to exert power over women in the workplace. It calls for a light to be shone on the secrets we’ve lived with because we don’t have the money to fight back. It offers assistance, real help, to those who never thought it possible to seek justice with their defense fund that will be handled by National Women’s Law Center.
Time’s Up provides links to organizations like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces the existing laws banning sexual harassment in the workplace. The Times Up website also offers assistance to women experiencing abuse in the home with links to National Domestic Violence Hotline and RAINN. There are links to Lean In, which pulls together advice from women in over 150 different countries, and 50/50 by 2020, a group of LGBTQ, women, and people of color advocating for representation in entertainment.
Women’s voices have been easy to ignore in the past, one woman at a time. Now we are all screaming together and we will be heard. We will raise each other up and seek to right the wrongs we have suffered while trying to exist, work, and thrive in a world dominated by men who would take all of that from us. Time’s Up is a rallying cry that does more than speak the words we want to hear. It provides the means to create that end: equality and freedom from harassment.
You can help by donating to the Time’s Up defense fund or by just spreading the word to the women in your life that there is help out there. Real help.
