The British Oscars were handed out last night, and besides a few unusual fashion choices (more on that in Pajiba Love), it was an uneventful affair. Because all the usual films are nominated, and because all the usual films’ chances are discussed ad nauseum, it’s difficult to ever be surprised by winners. Basically, the horse race is between Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, and American Hustle, and sometimes Wolf of Wall Street, and their respective actors/actresses/directors. The awards shows just switch out their names from one ceremony to the next. This one had a decidedly British flavor, with Gravity winning Best British film, despite the fact that it starred American actors, was directed by a Mexican director, and was about a very American topic.
