David Letterman released an announcement on Colbert being brought in as a replacement:

“Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I’m very excited for him, and I’m flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses.”

A few points from EW’s interview with CBS’ Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler:

1) They talked about lots of people but Colbert “name just stood out above everybody else.”

2) He won’t do the show in character.

3) The show will maintain The Late Show title.

4) Craig Ferguson is still on the show for now, but she seemed a little dodgy about his future prospects (“Craig is here and doing his show at 12:30 and we love having him there.”)

5) CBS has no concerns about his politics.

Comedy Central is very happy for Colbert:

“Comedy Central is proud that the incredibly talented Stephen Colbert has been part of our family for nearly two decades. We look forward to the next eight months of the ground-breaking ‘Colbert Report’ and wish Stephen the very best.”

An insider says that Colbert’s replacement on The Colbert Report is expected to come from The Daily Show.

The other late night hosts are, per usual, being super nice and supportive.

Stephen Colbert, who signed a 5 year contract to be the host, also released this statement:

“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” Mr. Colbert said in a statement. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
