It’s been less than a week since Daveed Diggs gave his last Hamilton performance, and he’s already lining up a career’s worth of impressive projects. He’ll be starring in Andy Samberg’s HBO sports mockumentary (no, not that one, a new one), as well as an upcoming Julia Roberts movie. And now another super exciting role has been announced: Diggs will be taking his legendary smile to network TV, with a “substantial” reoccurring arc on Black-ish.
As it turns out, it pays to make your interests widely known, at least if you’re mega talented and famous. The show’s creator, Kenya Barris, saw Hamilton and took special note of Diggs’ insane charisma before learning how much he loves Black-ish.
I noticed each time — he was the guy where the audience kind of [perked] up and said, ‘Oh my God, this guy!’ And I had heard through some of the cast members and through some other people that ‘Black-ish’ was his favorite show. We had been looking for someone to bring on for [that] role, and I felt like he would be such a welcome addition to the family.
From the sound of it, the role is a perfect fit. Diggs will be playing Rainbow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) super charismatic, potentially insufferable, entitled hipster brother, Johan. Now, does that remind us of any other characters we know?
As Variety notes, there’s even a tenuous link to Diggs’ Hamilton characters, the exceedingly French Marquis de Lafayette and the France-loving Jefferson.
Johan “has been to Paris twice and he’s like, ‘You Americans!’” Barris said. Johan, as it happens, doesn’t like his butter to be too cold and complains about Americans’ mania for refrigeration. “He’s like, ‘This butter’s making my croissant crumble,’” according to Barris. “Dre is constantly snatching food from him.”
If you, like most of the world, missed seeing Daveed in Hamilton, at least you can bask in the minor consolation that you’ll be seeing this smile in your own home, hopefully in the H-est of Ds.
