HBO Will Show Analingus, But Here's Where They Will Draw the Line
Two years ago, HBO’s Girls featured an analingus scene. An actual scene in which Marnie receives butt oral. Here’s a GIF. It created some awkwardness around the dinner table between Alison Williams and her father, Brian Williams, but not as much awkwardness as when Brian Williams made up a story about being in a military helicopter that was forced down after being hit by an RPG (that lie seems so quaint now — I mean, it’s not like he made up a mass shooting incident).
Anyway, while HBO apparently had little problem greenlighting a scene featuring the fine art of salad tossing, the final season of Girls finally found a line that HBO wouldn’t cross. Here’s Lena Dunham, exec producer Judd Apatow, and former HBO entertainment president Sue Naegle discussing the scene in question with The Hollywood Reporter:
APATOW: From the beginning, we were aware that what we were doing was sexually provocative, and that’s what made it interesting and new and fun. Lena wanted to reveal something that is normally hidden — so often you’re not talking about a giant part of most people’s lives because people don’t want to portray it on film — and that opened up tons of stories that you’re usually not able to tell. But then we had a scene with a conclusion shot …
DUNHAM: It was actually cum arcing through a shot.
APATOW: And HBO said, “If this is in the show, we could lose our license.” We were like, “Oh my God, we’ve actually found the line at HBO.”
NAEGLE: In HBO’s defense, it was like a fire hose!
OK, so we now know exactly where the line is: Somewhere between analingus and a cum-shot geyser.
The sixth and final season of Girls premieres on Sunday, Feb. 12th.
