Hot diggity. HBO has picked up “Treme,” David Simon’s new series. Simon, of course, is the man behind “The Wire,” the greatest show to ever run on TV (s’true, look it up). He started working on “Treme” shortly after “The Wire” wrapped, turning his focus to post-Katrina New Orleans. Simon has talked about how the intent of this show is to intimately focus on the people, and the city itself, trying to rebuild themselves from the brink of utter devastation.
A new show from Simon (regardless of how many episodes we get — HBO is still negotiating this point) is a good thing. It’s an even better thing when it stars, among others, Wendell Pierce (Bunk on the “The Wire”) as a jazz musician, Steve Zahn, Kim Dickens, Clarke Peters and Melissa Leo (settle down, Boozehound!). I’m so very excited for this show.
And in other good HBO news, Peter Dinklage has signed on to star in the pilot for “Game of Thrones.” The pilot, to be directed by Tom McCarthy (who worked with Dinklage in The Station Agent), is based on a series of George R.R. Martin books (the Song of Fire and Iceseries) which apparently present a dark and violent medieval-type fantasy. I’m sure many of you are familiar with what I hear is a good series — tell us more.
