HBO Just Made It a Whole Lot Easier to Cut That Cable Cord

Back in October of last year, we let you know about HBO’s game-changing plan to offer their programming via standalone streaming service, and true to chairman and CEO Richard Plepler’s word, it’s headed your way this year.

Via International Business Times and CNBC comes word that HBO is partnering with Apple to launch the new service next month, right in time for the Game of Thrones fifth season premiere, April 12th. (Cue the cheering from those of you who lost your parents’ HBO Go password, again.) Along with Apple TV, the newly dubbed “HBO Now” streaming service will be distributed by X-Box, Amazon, Roku and PlayStation. Purchasing the monthly service directly from HBO is expected to cost $15.00 per month, “about what consumers pay when they order HBO through their cable, satellite or telco provider.” While that’s quite a bit higher than most of us pay for Netflix, HBO’s counterargument is that they provide much more original programming, as well as more current films; “It’s a premium product, and it will be priced accordingly.” (Plepler) HBO has yet to confirm the details.

Looks to me like it’s damned good to be in that driver’s seat. If HBO makes that launch date, their timing is perfect. Led by the dulcet sounds of Ramin Djawadi’s majestic Game of Thrones theme song, HBO Now may well usher in a new dawn for the droves blackmailed by cable providers to pay for bundles of crap channels.
