Haters Can Suck It: Kristen Stewart Just Made History
Kristen Stewart cemented her place in cinema history, becoming the first American actress ever to win the coveted Cesar (France’s Oscar essentially). This win and her reaction marks a major shift in Stewart’s career. For a while, this ingenue’s been tough to root for, offering more scowls than smiles. Of course, considering how her life has become a never-ending sideshow of paparazzi peppered with personal scandal, who can blame her for feeling more fuck off than friendly?
But check her out in the video below. Accepting her Best Supporting Actress Cesar for Clouds of Sils Maria, Stewart has dropped the too-cool-for-school schtick, and genuinely seems so overwhelmed she’s afraid her quivering palms will drop the history-making honor. It’s friggin’ adorable.
In the wake of Twilight and Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart’s shied away from big Hollywood endeavors to focus on smaller, more intimate and challenging cinema like Camp X-Ray, to Still Alice and of course The Clouds of Sils Maria. It’s a strategy that’s not only helping her grow as an actress but also winning her a newfound respect among critics and filmmakers.
Basically, Kristen Stewart is re-invigorating her career. And with work this good, we’re on board.
Written and directed by Olivier Assayas, Clouds of Sils Maria stars Juliette Binoche as a veteran actress struggling when a new play bears a disturbing parallel to her own life. Kristen Stewart plays her curious personal assistant, who may love or loathe her. Plus Chloe Grace Moretz. Watch its trailer here:
