Well, this is a bummer. You’d think when an actor signs on for a fairly major role on one of television’s best series, he’s done his homework and knows what he’s getting himself into, no? To any Thomas Harris reader or Hannibal fan, Mason Verger is a familiar name; the character’s arc is no secret. So it’s a goddamn huge disappointment that after making the commitment — and absolutely owning the role — Michael Pitt has decided (his choice) to leave Hannibal.
I’ll give him this much; plot-wise, it’s actually a fine time for a recast. *Season 2 spoilers ahead…when last we left Mason Verger, he’d been relegated to a hospital bed (in his own home) after Hannibal drugged and manipulated Mason into cutting off his own face and feeding it to the dogs. As book readers know (swipe ahead for book spoilers) Verger isn’t long for this world, anyway. After his continued efforts to kidnap and kill Hannibal — expected to be part of Season 3’s storyline — sister Margot exacts her revenge by shoving Mason’s eel down his throat., Mason’s future storyline will mostly involve muffled voicework, so the actor isn’t doing the show a huge disservice. Still, it seems pretty crappy to just walk out on the series; fans of both Pitt and Hannibal are sure to be disappointed.
As for Fuller and Co., so far no comments — just a quiet recast in the form of Joe Anderson (The Grey, Across the Universe, The Divide)…
…who’s already in full make-up for filming:
As for you, Michael Pitt; r-u-d-e.
And we all know how Hannibal feels about that.
One wonders if Michael Pitt was really recast because he is notoriously difficult to work with?
Hannibal returns to NBC in 2015.
