Guess He's Not the Last!

This news makes me feel all funny inside. The cartoon version of The Last Airbender is pretty much universally loved by those who’ve seen it. It’s a nice three season arc and it wraps up all the loose ends and it all ends happily.

But now this story comes across my desk. (In the interest of full disclosure, there’s no desk.)

They want to continue the story. It will be set 70 years later and will feature the new Avatar, a girl named Korra. She has mastered every element, except for air, and I assume the lack of airbenders to teach her will be an issue. Maybe this could work? I once nerdily dreamed up a similar way to continue the series.

They also mention that it will be a slightly more modern world with a Steampunk styled metropolis called Republic City. Maybe this is a good thing, there were hints of steampunk in the original and they were generally well-liked.

Here’s my two cents: The world of Avatar is a very rich and fleshed-out one. It’s similar to the Star Wars Universe in the way that it gives you little pieces and it makes you want to be a part of it. I would bet that there’s a lot of Airbender fan fiction. (Katara + Zuko 4 Evar.)

There is a potential downside to the story; it doesn’t say anything about the original series creators. If they were behind it, I’d have confidence and would certainly watch it. As it is… I worry.

Ok, here’s what they should really do. Keep the idea of people fighting with the elements. But this time make it a little more…let’s say Roman. Still kind of a historical vibe going on. Some intrigue and politics in there aaand I just described Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera . What I’m saying is, make that into a cartoon.

I know the animated Airbender gets some love around here. What do you guys think of this news?
