Oh No, There Goes Tokyo

I snapped this one up before Dustin could defile it with his ignorance and disrespect.

Because you must respect Godzilla, (Gojira to the purists among us). The classic Toho films should be a staple, a prerequisite, for all lovers of giant monsters. And frankly, anyone who doesn’t love Godzilla is no friend of mine.

Now, of course, I’m not speaking of the retarderiffic Roland Emmerich film of 1998. While it had decent effects, it was one of the most agonizingly painful scripts ever written. Matthew Broderick and Maria Pitillo have no fucking place in a Godzilla movie. Though Jean Reno is welcome in anything.

In any event, Legendary Pictures is gearing up for a new big screen version of our favorite daikaijū. The atomic-breathed monster will be CGI, which makes me a wee bit twitchy, but for the moment, producer Brian Rodgers is saying the right things to try to put the anxious army of geeks at ease. At a recent 3D summit (oh yeah — it’s going to be in 3D. Hmph), Rodgers dropped a few tidbits that the kind blokes at Bleeding Cool were nice enough to pass along. The highlights are the fact that it’s slated for 2012, and it’s going to pay homage to the originals, which is excellent news. He’s also vowed to “not make the same decisions” as Emmerich did in that last clusterfuck (meaning no stupid iguana evolutionary roots, and no egg-laying).

Perhaps most intriguing is that Rodgers stated that there will be another monster or monsters. This is the greatest news of all, methinks. Godzilla needs an ass to kick besides the army, so this is an outstanding decision. The inevitable question, of course, is which one? We’ve got legions of other monsters to choose from. Mothra? MechaGodzilla? Baragon? Rodan? Anguirus? KING FUCKING GHIDORAH?

Dude’s a planet killer. Recognize.

Anyway, perhaps the most ambitious (and potentially idiotic) statement from Rodgers is that he wants this to be the Batman Begins of Godzilla movies — or rather,m they want to draw some inspiration from Batman Begins. That would be a very neat trick indeed. Frankly, I’d settle for the Batman Returns of Godzilla movies.

Anyway, here’s the full video with Rodgers:
