What's the Opposite of a Good Idea Again?

Gemma Arterton has played a Bond Girl and starred in two of the most shitballs retarded films of the last year, Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans. She isn’t necessarily a horrible actress, it’s just that she basically plays the role of pretty side kick to a dashing male hero. That makes her saying in an interview that she’s talking to Ridley Scott about taking over the lead of the Alien prequel particularly eye rolling. She is everything that Ellen Ripley wasn’t.

Of course, it’s just the actress saying she has a meeting at this point, but it falls in line with the vaguely disquieting rumors that we’ve heard thus far about the film. First, there are going to be two films because that’s the cool thing to do these days. Second, it’s going to be in 3D, because that’s also the cool thing to do these days. Third, it’s a prequel, which in the context of the series kind of makes sense since Ash tells Ripley that the Company knew full well what they would find on the planet, but also is discouraging because prequels tend to be terrible.

In the wake of the Robin Hood debacle of trying to recapture the tepidly entertaining magic of Gladiator and everything seemingly wrong with the Alien prequel, I’m suspicious that just because someone makes a great film, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they know how to make a great film.
