This is probably the most original and innovative idea I’ve ever heard for a television series while also sounding incredibly bonkers.

Will Ferrell and longtime collaborator/writer/director Adam McKay are producing a drama series for Freeform channel called Motherland: Fort Salem. Created by Eliot Laurence, the series takes place in a timeline where the witches of the world worked out a deal with the American government: stop persecuting them and they will lead armies against the country’s enemies.

Bonkers, right?

In this alternate reality, women are the more dominant of the sexes and lead troops of witches into battle. Of course, these witches fight with magic spells instead of traditional war-making tools like guns. It sounds absolutely insane.

The teaser makes it seem like Motherland: Fort Salem is going to take itself very seriously, which may be to its detriment. I’m sure this will actually be an excellent guilty watch along with Freeform’s other drama series Sirens, which puts a new twist on mermaids.

One of the lead roles in currently being recast, but the series already has a 10-episode order from the network. The new lead will join Taylor Hickson (Deadly Class) and Jessica Sutton (Escape Room) as young witches in supernatural boot camp.
