Literally my two favorite new sitcoms of the season, Enlisted and Surviving Jack were canned by Fox today, along with one of my least favorite, Dads. EW’s headline: “Fox cancels ‘Dads’ and 2 other comedies.” THOSE TWO OTHER COMEDIES WERE THE GOOD ONES.
It sucks because both were teeming with phenomenal characters, who are unlike anything else we see on television. Surviving Jack was based on Justin Halpern’s I Suck at Girls, and he finally got to pay proper tribute to his father (the same guy Sh*t my Dad Says was based on) and Christopher Meloni absolutely killed in the role. Enlisted, likewise, was different. The concept was completely new to network television, and in a better time slot, I’m certain it would’ve performed better. And now we lose those characters, who we were able to invest in more after 6-8 episodes than we have in characters in other sitcoms that have been on for years.
The common denominator to both? They were Bill Lawrence produced sitcoms, and contained the same brand of energy, off-the-wall humor, and pathos that we saw in Scrubs, and that brand of comedy has become increasingly rare.
We lost two good ones today, folks. Two good ones that — with some time and nurturing — had the potential to be great ones.
(Update: Rake also cancelled.)
