Marvel has cast the last of its four Defenders title leads with Game of Thrones alum Finn Jones as Daniel Rand, AKA Iron Fist. Jones will join former Dexter scribe Scott Buck for the upcoming Netflix series.
But it wouldn’t be an internet casting announcement these days if there wasn’t some degree of controversy. While the original comic character is white, there was some hope from fans that the character might be updated for the new series and portrayed by an Asian actor instead. Then of course there’s the opposite side of that which says it might be more racist to cast an Asian actor just because the character uses martial arts as his primary weapon. Because we all know how racist it is whenever Ming-Na Wen’s Agent May kickfights her way out of a jam in Marvel’s Agents of Shield. Hopefully though, the show will at least pull a Marco Polo and take advantage of the opportunity to cast some of the deep pool of talented Asian actors (and writers) to fill in the rest of the cast, including some of the other leads. I’m hoping to get a little more nuance and depth to Wai Ching Ho’s Madame Gao, first introduced onscreen in last year’s Daredevil.
Jones is currently set to reprise his role as Ser Loras in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones, and it can’t be said for certain what this casting might mean for the future of the Knight of Flowers but.. (SPOILER ALERT)
Book readers might already have an idea.
