Fast and Furiosa: Charlize Theron Runs With Her Action Heroine Realness With 'Fast 8'
Charlize Theron has gotten some flack recently for saying it can be hard for her to get roles as a “gorgeous, fucking, gown-wearing eight-foot model.” But in the wake of her Furiosa fierceness in Mad Max: Fury Road, the makers of Fast and the Furious
a have been eager to get this modern Amazon in their ever-expanding ensemble.
Back in February, Variety reported that Universal had put out an offer for the South African actress to play the villain in the eighth film in this global sensation series, Fast 8. After months of negotiation, Universal announced Theron’s official casting on Facebook:
This is great and all. But is anyone else a smidge disappointed they’re going glamor-puss instead of diesel grease for her look?
At this time, Universal is releasing no details about Theron’s role beyond her being the baddie. Will she be the unspoken-of sister to the Shaw brothers, previously played by Luke Evans and Jason Statham in Fast & Furious 6 & 7 respectively? Statham is back to reprise his role. Does this mean Theron will be a fresh fiend rolling against Vin Diesel and company? Perhaps Shaw and Dom will have to team up against a greater threat like Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Dom did? Please feel free to speculate wildly in comments.
In other Fast 8 news, The Wrap reports Game of Thrones towering redheaded hunk Kristofer Hivju has signed on to play a henchman. The Norwegian actor known for portraying Tormund Giantsbane on the hit HBO series joins Theron, Diesel, Statham, Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and Michelle Rodriguez for F. Gary Gray’s much-anticipated and hugely budgeted follow-up to his heralded music biopic Straight Outta Compton.
Little else is known about Fast 8 at this point beyond that’ll it’ll be set partially in New York City, and has location shoots in Iceland, Atlanta, and Cuba. Oh, and that it’ll open April 17, 2017.
