Look, if we’re being perfectly honest, we all knew that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would be a franchise and not just a single stand alone film. But that doesn’t mean for a second that I didn’t audibly gasp and post an all caps sharing of this news onto my Facebook page:
I can hear some of you already clacking away on your keyboards with your beating a dead horse comments or the too much of a good thing responses. Well to that I say:
Not in my potions class you don’t.
Reports are saying the series will cover the Wizarding World war that was touched upon in Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows. You know, the one with all that sexual tension between Dumbledore and pre-Voldemort Dark Lord Grindlewald.
I can already hear some of you saying it. “Prequels though!” And you’re right, Episodes I-III did indeed suck. But I still have high hopes for this series, I love the visuals in just the trailer so far of how the Wizarding World looks while set against a period backdrop, and I think the smart way to go is to tell an independent story that only shares a common universe with the Harry Potter saga, with maybe some crossover characters but mostly stands alone. For me this feels way more like what the Knights of the Old Republic series is to the Original Trilogy than the prequels.
But then again, this how I recently celebrated that I got my name and gender legally changed:
So I might be a wee bit biased.
