This is normally the slot where we’d feature Sarah’s “Mad Men” recap, but now that the season has ended, the best I can offer are plot details on Matthew Weiner’s You Are Here, a romantic dramedy that he had begun pre-production on last year before it got derailed by the filming schedule of “Mad Men.” He’s free again, at least for a certain window of time, so we can see how far along he gets this time before “Mad Men” ramps up again.
Last year, when it was announced that You Are Here had been postponed, Brad Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Jennifer Aniston were attached. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore, according to The Hollywood Cog. Currently, Jack Black, Matt Dillon, and Renee Zellwegger are attached, and there’s an offer out to Rachel McAdams, though — as always until production officially begins — those names are subject to change. In either respect, the current names have to be considered a downgrade relative to the previous names attached.
What I hadn’t seen before are plot details about You Are Here, other than it was a script that he had written before “Mad Men” came along. It seems about as far from “Mad Men” as you could expect. It’s about about two roommates in their 30s, preoccupied with dodging the responsibilities and rigors of adult life. That is, until the sudden death of one of the men’s fathers, which makes his unstable son the new owner of a general store, a country home and millions of dollars worth of Amish farmland.
The heir’s role — an unemployable, paranoid, pot-head — is the one with Black currently attached (though it does seem more suitable to Galifianakis), while the other roommate is described as a skirt-chasing weatherman, who drinks, smokes pot, and objectifies women. The woman potentially played by Rachel McAdams is actually the widow of the father, a younger bohemian type with which both men begin to fall in love. The potential Zellwegger role is the uptight sister who is pissed off that all the land and the store were left to her brother.
Assuming everything lines up, filming could begin early next year.
In other Hollywood Cog related news, it was reported (via Collider) that Lea Michele is eying a role in New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall’s pseudo-sequel to Valentine’s Day. It’ll be another huge ensemble, and though the Cog has provided full plot details of the script (which six people have now had a hand in writing), I can’t imagine boring you all with them. Suffice to say, it’s as pat and predictable as Valentine’s Day, and involves — among 8 or 9 other subplots — a pregnant woman trying to be the first to deliver a baby in the new year, and a secretary who quits her job in order to fulfill her New Year’s Resolutions from the previous year. However, the Cog did say that Lea Michele was up for the role of a professional back-up singer who gets stuck in an elevator with a hipster dude she at first doesn’t like, but naturally falls for, and ends up at the New Year’s Eve party. It might also be worth noting that the role for the secretary described above is being offered to Meryl Streep. We can only hope that she declines.
