Yesterday, after Josh Kurp so benevolently tipped me off to a discussion comparing Sharon Tate to “Mad Men’s’ Megan Draper over on Reddit, the rest of the Internet picked it up and ran with it, adding a few new wrinkles of their own. It was on EW, Slate, the Daily Beast, and the AV Club, among dozens of sites, by the end of the day. By the middle of today, the inevitable backlash had even begun, as backlashes are wont to do.
But it’s important to note that it wasn’t Uproxx or even Reddit that initially instigated the theory, it was the daughter of photographer William Helburn, who pointed out that it was her father who took those iconic photographs of Sharon Tate on the set of Rosemary’s Baby for Esquire that would inspire the “Mad Men” costume designer to dress Megan in that certain way. The daughter, who goes by White Lady, had one hell of a fun day on Twitter yesterday.
As a result, Esquire has pulled the photos from their archives and reposted them, and they are pretty goddamn fantastic. You should go over their to check out the full slide show, but here’s a taste.
