'Empire' Audience Still Growing

Fox’s new drama, Empire came out of the gate strong and has been growing its audience every week since. It’s one of the most-watched dramas on TV in its first season, and the February 11th episode was the first TV show to get more than one million views via Comcast’s XFinity on-demand. It’s not hurting the live viewership though, if anything it looks like it’s helping the week-by-week growth. It’s the first series since 1991 to have an increase in ratings for five consecutive weeks. They’re making history over there.

The show has been so successful, in fact, that Fox is apparently considering a concert series for the cast members, similar to the Glee concerts they did a few years ago. Songs from the show are making waves, this week’s “You’re So Beautiful” featuring Jussie Smollet and Yazz (Jamal and Hakeem) is currently #30 on iTunes Top Songs chart, with Jussie’s solo version at #57.

While I am mostly watching for Cookie (seriously, Taraji P. Henson is doing fantastic work on this show, and Lucious is his most interesting and complex when dealing with her) the music is pretty good and Jussie Smollett in particular is putting in a lot of work on the music front, including co-writing this past week’s “You’re So Beautiful” and was recently signed to Columbia records.

There’s only three episodes left this season (two regular and a two-hour finale) but the show has already been renewed for a second season so if you haven’t been watching you’ll have a chance to catch up before it comes back. But even if it’s not something you’re necessarily a fan of, you can at least appreciate that a first season show is currently beating network stalwarts like The Big Bang Theory and, if the trend keeps up, might even beat NCIS with its finale. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and believe in the power of Cookie.
