Emma Thompson and Kevin Kline Will Star in 'Beauty and the Beast' with Emma Watson
Remember how excited we were for Cinderella when we heard Cate Blanchett would be the wicked stepmother? The power of great casting is enough to get us excited for anything—and the new Beauty and the Beast has us completely stoked.
First, we have Emma Watson, feminist icon and spell-caster of our hearts. Then, Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley from Downton Abbey) and Luke Evans. Sure, why not, good times. Then, Josh Gad. As a big Book of Mormon fan, I was sold. But today’s news trumps all. And that is the news that Emma Thompson has been cast as Mrs. Potts and Kevin Kline has been cast as Maurice, Belle’s father. And they’re going to sing!
According to Disney, the movie will feature the 1991 movie’s original songs, which were written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice. (Ashman died before the original movie was released.) Songs written by Menken and Rice, which didn’t appear in the movie, were featured in the Broadway production of the show.
The movie is due out March 17, 2017, and will be released in 3D. Per Disney, a mix of CG and live-action will be used.
This is all just downright fabulous.
