Donald Trump Loses the Coveted Endorsement of Another Fictional Republican
New Girl showrunner Elizabeth Meriweather has spent part of her summer writing about politics for Vulture, or more specifically, writing parodies about Donald Trump and his family, like Eric Trump’s Really at Wit’s End With His Workplace Harassment Situation. Later this month, her political sensibilities will be featured on an episode of New Girl, where Jess and Cece go campaigning for Hillary Clinton.
But what about the show’s token Republican? What is he going to do when faced with the prospect of voting for Donald Trump?
Schmidt — who once pretended to be one of Romney’s sons to date a woman — will be doing what many Republicans are doing this election season: Pretending that Donald Trump doesn’t exist, according to TVLine:
“Schmidt doesn’t acknowledge there even is an election this year,” reveals co-showrunner Brett Baer with a laugh. “He doesn’t acknowledge that Trump exists. He says multiple times throughout the episode, ‘Paul Ryan 2020!’”
It doesn’t mean he’ll be voting for Hillary — who he will call a “flip-flopping, pantsuit-wearing helmet head” — but like the conservative Texas newspaper, The Dallas Morning News, Schmidt does not believe in his own party’s candidate. Indeed, if Trump wants to collect the fictional Republican vote, he may have to lobby Jack Donaghy who, on the one hand, has a strained relationship with Trump. On the other hand, he did inspire Trump’s campaign slogan.
