'Doctor Who' Christmas Special: Who Better Than Talalay To Direct Capaldi's Farewell and Whittaker's First Appearance?
The Doctor Who Christmas special has its director lined up, and they have chosen well!
Thrilled that I will be directing the amazing #DoctorWho13 Jodie Whittaker in Xmas episode. Plenty of time before Xmas to get that done.— Rachel Talalay (@rtalalay) July 17, 2017
Rachel Talalay will be at the helm for what promises to be an epic festive special, giving us Capaldi’s last hurrah, David Bradley as the First Doctor, and the first appearance of Jodie Whittaker as Thirteen.
Talalay isn’t new to the Whoniverse, having directed some of the best episodes of recent Who: the last two episodes of the last series, last year’s Christmas special and the one-hander that saw Twelve stuck in a Gallifreyan dial-thing for billions of years. She directed Sherlock’s season 4 opener, ‘The Six Thatchers’, and has worked on The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. Talalay also gets massive cult classic credit for bringing us Tank Girl.
The Christmas special promises us a lot: stellar actors, a high concept premise, a regeneration, and a director who has the vision and the skill to pull it off. Those whiny boys who are apparently flouncing away, never to return, because it’s the TARDIS not the BRADIS, will be missing a treat.
Talalay will play a massive role in setting the tone for Thirteen’s arrival, hopefully striking a balance between reassuring those fans who are fearful of change that there is nothing to be afraid of, whilst giving the show a big shake up and not underselling the fact that Whittaker’s casting is a big deal. It’s a big responsibility. But Talalay’s delivered consistently so far.
A female Doctor and a female director? Keep basking in those male tears, Whovians!
