When you hear they’re making a movie about the founding of Chippendales, the male strip club empire, it’s reasonable to expect a sort of historically-accurate Magic Mike. Turns out the real history of Chippendales runs a bit more backstabby and murder-y though. Who smells Oscar bait?!
According to Deadline, Dev Patel (Lion) is in talks to play Steve Banerjee, the Indian immigrant turned club owner who, from what I can tell, did not personally take his clothes off on stage. Ben Stiller (Zoolander) will play Nick DeNoia, the choreographer who helped find the dancers and ran the touring company. He also, SPOILER ALERT, was later murdered — and Banerjee pled guilty to arranging it. He was then found hanging of an apparent suicide in his jail cell just hours before he would have been sentenced for a number of crimes. And strangely, that isn’t the only tale of murder and suicide associated with Chippendales (former Playboy bunny Dorothy Stratten helped come up with the iconic cuffs and collar uniforms, before she was killed by her boyfriend in a murder/suicide).
There certainly is no shortage of story to tell, from crime to drugs, excess, and the American Dream gone bad. And in fact producer David Permut has been trying to get the film off the ground for 20 years now. With financing locked in from Bold Films, all they need is a director, which will likely be announced soon.
