Forget 'True Detective'; David Fincher Will Direct the Entire First Season of HBO's 'Utopia'

You know how you’re feeling very unsure about the second season of True Detective after hearing about the downgraded cast, and no full-season director commitment? Well, even if it all turns out disappointing, now you have something better to look forward to.

David Fincher told Playboy his HBO series with Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn would be “all I’m focusing on next year;” turns out that’s because he’ll be directing every single episode. Calling himself “a junior conspiracy theorist” (high fives), Fincher spoke of his admiration for Dennis Kelly’s wildly entertaining UK series, Utopia (listen to BB; it’s TV’s best show).

“I like the world of it…I like the characters - I love Dennis’s honesty and affinity for the nerds.”

For those of you who haven’t yet watched (why?!) the UK series (*not* the Fox reality show), Utopia centers on a group of people brought together by their mutual interest in a graphic novel, whose pages they try to decipher. After finding each other online, the group decides to meet in person to see and discuss the original manuscript. They find themselves the target of a couple of terrifying assassins…who are part of a large network determined to get their hands on the manuscript, and a certain woman named Jessica Hyde.

In all honesty, the original series is so mind-bogglingly fantastic, it’s irksome that once again, we Americans think we need to remake it. BUT, if it’s going to be done, we can’t ask for better than Fincher to have a go at it, nor a better place for it to land than HBO. And with this news that he’ll direct the whole first series, I probably won’t be able to stay away. At the very least, maybe this will prod you to watch the original (which you can buy —DVD— on Amazon, or *cough* find other places).

I haven’t thought much about casting yet, but a solid pick for Lee might be Fargo’s Adam Goldberg.

HBO’s Utopia is expected to premiere in 2016.
