There are only so many ways we can rave about the British thriller Utopia; if you hadn’t heard, it was probably the best show on television when it originally aired. Simply put, it is one of the most twisty, terrifying, violent and inventive series we’ve ever seen. Find it (DVD, Channel 4 [Hola Unblocker]), watch it; you need it.
This being America, if we hear about a great UK show, we simply can’t go on living without adapting it ourselves. At least in this case, we couldn’t ask for better than HBO and David Fincher, who’ll direct the entire series a la True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga. With Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn writing the script, all that’s left is to nab a great cast for the pivotal roles, and we’re on our way to a worthy homage. In a great bit of morning news to go along with your cuppa, The Wrap is reporting that Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star, Rooney Mara is in talks for a role. Though the news was tweeted without specificity as to who she’d play, there’s really only one character who’d make sense. Mara is the perfect answer that oft-repeated Utopia question: Where is Jessica Hyde? (Insert *shudder* here.)
Keep your fingers crossed Mara signs on, and if you’ve seen the original series, join me in a bit of dreamcasting:
Becky: Eve Myles
Ian: Richard Ayoade
Lee and Arby: Okay, I can’t! I can’t! They simply can’t be recast. Paul Ready and Neil Maskell
Utopia will air on HBO, date TBA. But seriously, watch the original. Chili, sand, bleach, spoon…
