According to unnamed “sources,” Daniel Craig will not be returning to play James Bond. The Daily Mail is reporting that the actor has turned down £68 million to return for two more films (I believe that’s close to $1 trillion in American dollars, right?).
While the source is the iffy The Daily Mail, there is enough context to the reports that a number of large, more respectable outlets have picked up the story. Craig, after all, stated that he’d rather “slash my own wrists” than do another Bond movie during press rounds last year, and candidly spoke ill of the character to several outlets.
The report also comes only days after bookmakers stopped taking bets on who would become the next Bond when Tom Hiddleston was spotted having lunch with Sam Mendes and the Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli. Based on his work in The Night Manager, Hiddleston would be an excellent Bond, although many would prefer Idris Elba, who looks to be tied up with The Dark Tower for the foreseeable future. Liam Glynn, a representative for Irish bookmakers BoyleSports, said in a press release: “Judging by the gamble on Tom Hiddleston we expect that it’s only a matter of days before he is announced as Daniel Craig’s replacement.”
