Could McConaughey Be Our Next Great Villain? Maybe.

Take this kind of thing with the giant boulder of salt one should always take casting rumors for things not officially in pre-production even, but there’s been some talk of a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand kicking around for a while and now the (current) director reportedly wants the former shirtless wonder to play villain Randall Flagg.

I honestly think this could be pretty great. I preferred the parts of The Stand that dealt with how a modern plague would rip through the US more than the second half where Flagg was more prominent, but Matthew McConaughey’s recent roles show that he could make a very good villain. There was a menace to Rust Cohle in True Detective that I’d never seen out of him before, and I know that he was praised for his very dark turn in Killer Joe recently. Randall Flagg needs to be very imposing but charismatic, and this could be an inspired bit of casting if it works out.
