Conan's Villain, Robot Fighters, And Remakes: A Trade News Round-Up

OK, we’ve got a few stories rattling around today, including new footage from Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel, a pretty badass look at Stephen Lang as the villain in the remake of Conan The Barbarian, and some painful news about the fantastic Attack The Block, one of the best movies I saw at SXSW, from director Joe Cornish and producer Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead).

First, here’s the new image of Stephen Lang as Khalar Zym, the baddie in Marcus Nispel’s Conan remake. Sure, there’s a bit more forehead in this shot than I’m perhaps comfortable, but hey — it’s Stephen Lang, who despite his ridiculous scenery chewing was probably the best part of Avatar. I like seeing the guy get work. And he’s apparently dead set on playing Zym as a pretty nasty villain. As he said last fall:

I wanted him to be like a knife… I wanted him, in profile, to almost disappear if possible. I actually have some photos that I am forbidden to show right now. I know there are these photos of Jason out there, this gorgeous stud of a Conan leaping around shirtless. Truth of the matter is, I kick his ass for almost two hours.

I dig that. Here’s the pic:

Next up, we’ve got a couple of clips from Real Steel, the robot boxing movie (man, it hurts to type that) starring Hugh Jackman (that hurts even more) and Evangeline Lilly (OK, that’s actually just about the right speed for her). They can be accessed via a series of viral website shenanigans at the film’s official site. Considering they’re a combined 12 seconds long, I don’t recommend wasting your time. Alternatively, you can just be lazy and watch them here:

Finally, the dumbest news of the day (and that’s really saying something): Several of us saw Attack The Block (my review is here, if you’re interested) at SXSW, and all of were pretty much unanimous in our love for it. It’s a blast of a flick, and everyone should see it. Well before the festival, studio folks were worried about whether or not people would be able to understand the thick British accents, not to mention the street slang the kids in the film use. So, they’re apparently thinking of subtitles. Oh, and they’re thinking of a remake as well, because of course they are.

First of all, obviously I think the subtitle thing is completely idiotic. I also think it’s never going to happen. The obstacle with getting American audiences to see Attack The Block isn’t the dialogue — it’s that it’s made by a director and stars a cast that no one’s ever heard of. The dialogue is, to be frank, the least of their problems, and likely wouldn’t make a lick of difference in the box office.

As for the remake? I’m not surprised about the rumor, nor would I be surprised if it happens. I’d be annoyed as fuck, because the movie is goddamned brilliant as is, and much of what makes it so great is the cast, the setting, and the dialogue. This is a bit more likely, but it’s still way to early for anything beyond idle speculation.

As for what I think? I think they’re both dumb fucking ideas, but far be it from me to be shocked that Hollywood has dumb fucking ideas.
