Clark Kent's Got A Brand New Pair Of Glasses In The Man Of Steel. Wait, No, The Opposite Of That. But He Does Have A New Mom

Back in the heady hot days of summer, Julia Ormond was cast as Superman’s biological mother, the Kryptonian Lara Lor-van opposite Russel Crowe’s Jor-El. The fact that either of these two were going to appear in the Man of Steel seemed perplexing at the time, but at least they were well matched, which was also true of the Kevin Costner/Diane Lane coupling as Superman’s adopted Earth folks. So, now that Deadline is reporting that Julia Ormond has left the production, for reasons unspecified (though, I think we can assume she either got tired of dodging Crowe’s cell phones or of laughing at Zack Snyder’s direction), and has been replaced by the much less tested and well-known Ayelet Zurer.

It’s probably a little cruel to publicly ask, Who?, but it’s not wholly unreasonable. The actress has been in movies with an impressive range in quality, from the forgettable (Vantage Point) to the regrettable (Angels & Demons) to the memorable (Munich), without making the deepest of impressions. If you still aren’t sure who she is, here’s a picture:

If you still aren’t sure who Ayelet Zurer is, but you think she kind of looks like Anne Hathaway and Blake Lively ran into each other at full speed, then you aren’t alone. I’m sure she’ll be fine, as the role certainly doesn’t call for much, and she’s worked with some impressive talent before so she can handle whatever Snyder can dish out with what is most likely little more than a cameo. But, really, at this point, in spite of the short notice, it’s just mildly shocking another A-list talent wasn’t enlisted. Of course, that Zurer has to report for duty as Superman’s mom this week might have something to do with it.

Oh, and here are a couple of new-ish images of Superman himself, Henry Cavill, decked out in his Clark Kent best. You will notice two things: a) the dubious lack of nerd spectacles and b) that Clark seems to be a bike messenger in the new film.

I sincerely hope this doesn’t mean that Clark Kent refuses to even bother with a secret identity, anymore, and if Zack Snyder is just going to CGI them in post production later then I’m going to boycott this film! (Ahem.) Nah, he’ll probably just put them on when he gets to the Daily Planet, and besides, it’s not like Clark’s glasses are Catwoman’s cat ears or anything. Honestly, I just wanted an excuse for the reference in the title; otherwise, I had nothing.
