I think the eruption of Anne Hathaway hate is one of the most beautiful spectacles of contradiction the Internet has to offer. Let’s check off the boxes for being liked on the Internet: attractive, talented, willing to star in solid genre film, not opposed to toplessness in a role.

Let’s be clear. According to all specifications on such things, Anne Hathaway should be the most liked actress on the Internet. She hits all the marks. I think the only other woman to do so was the one that the mad scientist nerds created in Weird Science.

But oh no, she’s not genuine enough leading up to the awards shows, let us destroy her and build a monument to the futility of pleasing our greased hordes.

My theory? Uncanny valley. As a robot gets closer and closer to human-like, they get neater and neater, until that point where they’re just shy of being actually human, at which point they get creepier than clowns under our beds. Anne Hathaway falls into the uncanny valley of the perfect woman for the Internet, which means she gets creepy by falling just short.

Or people are just dicks, but my theory has the benefit of being overly complicated whilst referring to robots, so I think I’m on solid ground.

So anyway, trade news. Anne Hathaway got hired onto Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar which at the moment exists only as a vague plot description about and “a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest borders of our scientific understanding”. I’m rooting for Hathaway to be the evil computer trying to become human by wearing their skins.
