Christina Hendricks, who had previously been cast in Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places as the relatively minor character of a stripper, has now been promoted. She will play the mother of the lead character in flashbacks, a beefier role less half nude role, although not exactly a happier one for those familiar with Flynn’s novel.

Charlize Theron will play her present-day daughter in the film, which will follow Libby (Theron), who learns that the supposed massacre of her family by brother Ben, which she testified in court decades beforehand, might not be what was assumed. Chloë Moretz and Corey Stoll have also been cast. Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key) adapted the screenplay and will direct.

It’s a fantastic book, but honestly, the casting seems all wrong so far, especially Theron.
