Cher Joins 'Mamma Mia' Sequel, Which Now Completely Justifies Its Existence
We all know there’s no reason a sequel to Mamma Mia exists beyond a need for Benny and Bjorn to make another money vault to Scrooge McDuck into. They already used up all the best ABBA songs in the first film, and here it won’t even have the decency to let the women director and writer team who made the stage show and movie such a success return to complete the job (yes, a man is taking over those duties). Hell, I enjoyed the movie in a trashy tipsy hen night revelry kind of way and I’ve no desire to see this film, even though I am sort of delighted that it’s going to be called Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which is both a great callback to the song and confirmation of how dragged out it all is.
Well, I didn’t until CHER joined the cast.

That’s right, the Oscar winning actress and general legend of Twitter will be making her first film since Burlesque seven years ago (remember that one?) in an unspecified role. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the entire original cast will return, as well as younger versions of the veteran cast, to be played by Lily James, Alexa Davies, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan and Hugh Skinner. Hey, it’s a fully paid Greek island holiday with ABBA songs, wouldn’t you take it?
