Considering the animator is a living legend, it should come as no surprise Hayao Miyazaki’s works hold the top three spots of Japan’s biggest grossing films. Well, that was until this weekend anyway, when Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name surpassed Princess Mononoke’s box office success to become the third-highest-grossing Japanese film in history.

Out 14 weeks, the body-swap anime snagged the top box office spot 12 times. And before its run is complete THR predicts Your Name will out earn Howl’s Moving Castle. But Spirited Away’s #1 record of ¥30.4 billion ($300 million) seems out of reach.

Your Name is fast becoming a cultural sensation, earning its helmer praise as “the New Hayao Miyazaki” and scoring the anime the sixth-highest box office totals in Japan, imported or domestic. Right now, its profits are nipping at the heels of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But what’s it all about? What’s the story that’s captured the imagination of a nation? Well, it’s sort of The City Mouse and the Country Mouse meets Freaky Friday.

A city boy and a country girl desperate for a change from their lives switch bodies, and become increasingly fascinated with each other from afar. Check out the trailer below:

Intrigued? FUNimation Entertainment is opening Your Name in Los Angeles on December 2nd. Hopefully an expansion will follow.

Kristy Puchko is intrigued/currently seeking a screening.
