Charlie Hunnam Joins Idris Elba for Guy Ritchie's 'King Arthur' Film Series

Quite a while back, we heard news that Guy Ritchie was working on a six-film King Arthur series, which frankly, sounds exhausting. I’m all for doing things right, but if Peter Jackson has taught us anything, it’s that there really can be too much of a good thing.

A while later, Pajiba favorite (and no, it’s not only because of his microphone) Idris Elba came on board; suddenly, the idea of 12 plus hours in a theater doesn’t sound that awful. Elba may or may not be playing Merlin; at the least he’ll mentor and train Arthur. And that brings us to today’s news; Deadline says Sons of Anarchy’s Hunnam is Ritchie’s choice to play the legendary King Arthur — the actor is in final negotiations. This seems a hell of a better career move for Hunnam than that Fifty Shades business, no? Variety is also reporting Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Godzilla) is a lock for the female lead.

I’m curious whether Ritchie will handle the material in his usual hyper-stylized manner; with this hot cast, I’m in for at least the first installment. Get your Lancelot suggestions in now (Jamie Dornan? Okay, okay…John Cleese).

King Arthur is already set for a July 22, 2016 release.
