I noticed last night before I went to bed that CBS was officially no longer on the Dish network and thought “Oh, that’ll be good to write about tomorrow” but then I woke up and apparently they went and made up overnight so it’s far less exciting.
Anyway, for about 12 hours CBS was removed from the Dish network due to an inability to reach an agreement on what Dish would be offering to keep them. The negotiations had been going on for six month prior to last night when the channel went dark. This is not the first time that Dish has experienced a blackout of channels, several channels were lost for about a month earlier this year. The CBS issue seems to have been resolved far more quickly as I imagine far more people would have been irate to lose their Sunday NFL games than were irate at losing CNN for a month.
It would have been interesting to see how things would have worked out if terms hadn’t been reached so quickly, CBS now has their own streaming site that boasts both back episodes of current series as well as the ability to stream live TV, including sports. Would their viewers have gone to the streaming service? Would Dish have lost a significant number of viewers? Would it have brought us just slightly closer to the ideal of a la carte TV channels? No one knows. But as one of the nation’s young people, I’m very glad I don’t have to help my grandmother set up a CBS All Access account before The Good Wife on Sunday.
