Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic Hate Each Other in Real Life: A Complete History (Updated)

Updated: US Weekly is now reporting that Nathan Fillion — beloved leader of Serenity — frequently bullied Stana Katic on set, leaving her in tears, according to more anonymous sources:

“Stana would cry on set because Nathan was such a bully to her … Stana would go in her dressing room and cry. A lot of people who work on the show don’t like Nathan. It’s not just her … Nathan has been nasty to Stana for a long time. Stana was a pro, just wanted to get in there and do her job.”

Katic’s rep, however, denies this, saying that Katic had “absolutely no issues” with Fillion.

News this afternoon that Stana Katic would not be returning to Castle next season came as a surprise to many, mostly because they had no idea that Castle was still on the air. Those who did know it was still on air weren’t as surprised, because apparently rumors have persisted for years that Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic do not get along on set.

That rumors all trace back to a few scant quotes over the years that have attributed to anonymous sources, and those quotes (from the likes of The National Enquirer) have taken on a life of their own despite repeated denials from both Fillion and Katic.

Here’s where the rumors originated:

The Daily reported in 2011 that an “insider” said the co-stars “can’t stand each other” and that Stana Katic “is the kind of girl that wants every guy to want her” and that’s her “problem” with Fillion — “he doesn’t.”

— After season six, according to The National Enquirer, Fillion grew jealous over Stana Katic’s increased role in the series saying, “The name of the show is Castle not Beckett, now fix it!” A “source” noted that “he pulled the trump card of there being no series without him, and producers gave in.”

According to another source, Katic nearly didn’t return for season eight. “It’s no secret that there is no love lost between these two. Things got so bad between them this past season that when one of them walked onto the set, the other one walked off.”

There’s not much there beyond anonymously sourced conjecture. However, according to source from the more reputable THR, there may have indeed been something to the rumors:

News that Katic would exit the drama ahead of season nine should come as little surprise. Sources tell THR that the actress, who negotiated a last-minute return for season eight, has been unhappy on the series and has had repeated clashes with lead Fillion. That led producers to split up the on-screen couple this season — drawing the ire of dedicated fans who had been waiting eight years for the couple to marry.

Seems like another Julianna Margulies/Archie Panjabi situation, where the low hum of rumors actually turned out to be true. Look for passive-aggressive tweets from the two stars in the coming months.
