I mean, look: If Christian Bale couldn’t spark any real interest in the franchise, and if Claire Danes’ stupendous brand of crazy couldn’t compel us, it feels like Terminator is not a matter of getting the right people or the right script. It feels like people have simply lost interest in the conceit. The Terminator franchise is like Martin Short: It continues to do its thing, we but kind of lost interest.
I love Emilia Clarke and I love Matt Smith and I love Jason Clarke (Jai Courtney, I could give or take), but these pictures basically Sam Worthingtonize them. The covers of EW reduced nerd royalty Matt Smith and Emilia Clarke to something akin to franchise gristle. I mean, look at Emilia Clarke and Courtney. What are those expressions? They’re like boredom, indifference and squintiness all crammed together, like toes in shoes three sizes too small.
Like the third and fourth films, Genisys is destined to be a minor disappointment that makes just enough money back worldwide that a sequel might be worthwhile in another five years when they turn over the cast AGAIN.
EW has some plot details, too, which sound recycled from the previous films:
The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent’s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.
Sure, OK. I’m pretty sure the third and fourth films were also the first movies in planned trilogies, but God love ‘em, Nick Stahl and Kristanna_Loken couldn’t get jobs as attendants on a Terminator ride at Disneyland these days.
