Breaking 'Spectacular Spider-Man' News Gives Us a Whedonverse Director and Possible RDJ Involvement
Back during the big Sony leak, there were a lot of Spider-Man rumors flying around: Sony was teaming up with Marvel, they were rebooting everything and ditching Andrew Garfield, they were giving us a female Spidey, and an Aunt May movie, and The Sinister Six. Some of those turned out to be 100% true, some were never fully addressed. But today a big announcement has come from Sony’s Spider-Man team via the Latino Review. It looks like we’ll be having a lot more Peter Parker in our future, as a new movie with indefinite sequels is coming our way, tentatively being called the Spectacular Spider-Man series. Here are some of the key elements as laid out by Latino Review:
—No new origin story, Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a givenBeside the possible involvement of Robert Downey Jr., the most exciting part of this whole thing is that the first Spectacular Spider-Man movie will be written and directed by Joss Whedon friend and collaborator Drew Goddard, who we know does teen action comedy supremely well.
—New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role. The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.
—A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers
—The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.
I know a lot of you are suffering from Spider-Man fatigue, and that’s totally understandable. No one was happy with where that franchise was heading (or already was, and had been for about a decade). But if we don’t have to see Uncle Ben die 100 more times, like a depresso comic book Groundhog Day, and instead get to see Spidey fight Iron Man and be snarky to Cap and Thor, all with Drew Goddard at the helm, that’s something worth being excited about.
ETA: A representative for Drew Goddard has said that he’s not yet confirmed for this project and is only in “very early talks,” but we can continue to hope, right?
