I haven’t seen the any of the A Star is Born movies, and knowing that Lady Gaga was cast in the lead (and Beyoncé before her) — and that it was based on a Judy Garland movie — a country-music flick is the last thing I was expecting (obviously, I haven’t seen the Kris Kristofferson/Barbara Streisand version, either). The trailer comes as a pleasant surprise.
Look: I’m a Southern fella, and I have a soft spot for country-music movies (except for that Gwyneth Paltrow flick, which was terrible). But I loved Crazy Heart, and does anyone else remember A Thing Called Love with River Phoenix and Samantha Mathis? This version of A Star is Born seems like a cross between the two.
I did not realize, either, that Brad Cooper could sing, or that Cooper and Lady Gaga (playing more of a Stefani Germanotta role) could make such a compelling pair. I expect the soundtrack — which features tracks written by Mark Ronson, Jason Isbell, Lukas Nelson, and Dave Cobb — will be huge come the fall.
Anyway, based on the trailer, I am deeply into this movie, which is also Cooper’s feature directorial debut. Grab a Jack and a pack of Marlboro Reds and check it out.
I think I might have fallen a little bit in love with Lady Gaga here. She’s gonna get famous, leave him, and break his heart, isn’t she?
A Star is Born opens in October.
Oh, and for novelty/nostalgia’s sake:
