The Black List is a list of all of the unproduced Hollywood scripts that garner the most praise from a certain set of insiders. Every year gets a list and some of those scripts go on to be made into successful and/or great movies (In Bruges, The Social Network) or made into dumpster fires (All About Steve, Clash of the Titans) OR it remains in Hollywood limbo, never to be made.
2016’s Black List was topped by Madonna biopic script Blond Ambition. Elyse Hollander is the writer of the highly sought-after script and had only written and directed shorts until now. Universal Pictures has the rights to Hollander’s script and they are moving forward with production. Alas, Brett Ratner is one of the producers, along with The Social Network’s Michael De Luca. De Luca can stay, but Ratner? Meh.
The film will see the rise of Madonna from her days struggling as an artist and through her first hits. This mean 1980s, kids. GLORIOUS. It also means there’s no need to cast the cavalcade of celebrities that would be required if the flick were set in the 90s. Shit, they would have to hire 80% of Hollywood.
At any rate, since Madonna is getting the type of film we’ve seen people win Oscars for, who do you think should play the Material Girl? I have a couple of ideas.
