'Bad Boys' TV Spinoff Starring Gabrielle Union Inexplicably NOT Called 'Bad Girls'... Yet
Bad Boys, the Michael Bay-directed buddy cop film starring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, was released in 1995. Bad Boys II, the even Bay-ier sequel, came out in 2003. There was talk of rounding things out with a threequel, to be released next year, but that seems to have fallen off the schedule for the time being. Instead, there’ll be a TV show starring Gabrielle Union as, one would presume, a Bad Girl. Not that they’re calling it Bad Girls yet. But, like, c’mon. What else are they gonna call it? “Bad Not-Boys”? “The Bad Boy’s Sister”?
Oh, right. Union will be playing her character from Bad Boys II, Syd Burnett, the sister to Martin Lawrence’s character who (SPOILER ALERT FOR A 14 YEAR OLD MOVIE) was secretly dating Will Smith’s character while ALSO secretly working as an undercover Special Agent. In the new series her character will leave Miami for Los Angeles and become an LAPD detective, where she’ll have a new partner named Nancy and… some more secrets, apparently.
Deadline reports that the TV spinoff was snagged by NBC with a pilot production commitment, and is being written by The Blacklist writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier. Union will be coming off of her BET series Being Mary Jane, which is ending next year with a two-hour series finale movie.
And honestly, it’s refreshing to see one of the bro-iest franchises to ever bro-down find new life with one of it’s few female characters. The fact that Gabrielle Union, who is uniformly fantastic, will be returning to her role is just the icing on the cake. Of all the needless reboots hitting the airwaves, this concept might actually prove interesting. Especially if they find ways to add some nonsense ballistics to the mix!
