Fans of Amy Sedaris probably knew what to expect when they heard she’d be making a 10-episode homemaking show for TruTV. If you’ve read her best-selling books I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence and Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People, you know that she leans heavily on wacky themes, outrageous costumes, quirky décor, occasional drug use (seriously, one chapter in I Like You featured a handy illustrated guide for identifying what drugs your guests are on based on their eyes), and strangely practical household tips. But for folks who only know her from her frequent appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman or her Comedy Central classic Strangers With Candy (which she created with Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello), the response may have been more along the lines of “Huh? Her?…Why?”

With that in mind, Amy appeared at TCA to explain her new series, which will showcase Sedaris using imaginative characters and her own off-beat humor to present diverse homemaking skills, from gutting a trout to death-bed etiquette to crocheting miniature sweaters for a mouse infestation. Each episode will have a theme, including grieving, poverty, love making, cooking for one, fish, gift giving, wood, and even a holiday special. And while the set is decorated with a bunch of her own stuff, including a hutch for her rabbit, she said the rabbit won’t actually appear in the show this season because “we did not have rabbit money in the budget.”

Martha Stewart she is not. In fact, it apparently took her three tries just to bake a potato correctly on the show.

The show will have plenty of guests, some of whom will appear as characters who are fake experts in a given field (Rachel Dratch, Chris Elliott, Paul Giamatti) and others who will appear as themselves (Stephen Colbert, Jane Krakowski).

And here is a clip to give you a taste of the show, featuring Sedaris and Krakowski singing about the wonders of glue:

It almost feels like a home-ec show in the vein of Alton Brown’s Good Eats — and if we’re lucky, it will run as long as that show too! At Home With Amy Sedaris premieres Tuesday, October 24th at 10:30pm EST on TruTV.
