It looks like Richard Curtis was inspired by that episode “Doctor Who” he wrote a while back (the charming Van Gogh episode, which come to think of it, is one of the last great stand-alone episodes of the series). In About Time, he reteams with the most unusual of muses, Bill Nighy, for a time travel rom com, which looks miles ahead of Rachel McAdams other time-travel rom-com, The Time Traveler’s Wife. In About Time, Domhnall Gleeson — who is probably going to be on a lot of ginger lists soon — has the ability to time travel, which he uses to Groundhog Day his way into a perfect relationship. Complications, obviously, ensue. There’s always a catch, damnit.
On paper — syrupy Richard Curtis plus time travel? — About Time doesn’t seem all that great, but hell if that overly sentimental trailer didn’t stab me in the heart, like too many Richard Curtis movies do.
What can I say? I’m a sucker for sweetness, sci-fi, Rachel McAdams, and soft-hearted Bill Nighy.
I also think that Domhnall Gleeson is going places.
