While this is still locked in at rumor-only status, it’s a multiple-source, publicly hinted, all but confirmed rumor. Word on the internet is that Paul Reubens has paired with Netflix for a brand spanking new Pee-Wee Herman movie which could pop up in our fairly immediate future. A Judd Apatow-produced Untitled Pee-Wee-Herman Project is already up on IMDB, and it had previously been tied to Universal, but that deal has fallen through. Reubens told the A.V. Club last month, “we now have such an amazing company involved, and that’s the really big announcement that hasn’t been made yet.” That company, from what we’re hearing now, is Netflix.
The Netflix move looks like a great one, both for the creators and for us. Most of us are still in a place where we’re enamored of the quality of Netflix’s original content (even if that may be quickly slipping). I’d guess the majority of any issues with our favorite TV shows or movies get traced back to “studio meddling,” which is where Netflix, famous for their serious lack of meddling, comes out ahead. The other upside of a Netflix original is the ability to fast track a project. They already have a script, written by Paul Rust (Comedy Bang! Bang!, Arrested Development), and according to Reubens, filming could start as soon as February.
The other hint that supports this rumor is that Netflix has been loading up on their Pee-Wee material. They already have Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-Wee and The Pee-Wee Herman Show streaming, and they’re soon adding seasons one and two of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. So, sure, I understand….
But I still feel confident in giving ourselves over to our initial responses:
